Mental Health Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment Planning

Course Description
With mental health disorders affecting millions of Kenyans yet remaining largely undiagnosed and untreated due to stigma and limited mental health infrastructure, there is urgent need for trained professionals who can competently assess, diagnose, and develop effective treatment plans for diverse psychological conditions. This rigorous professional program equips healthcare providers, counselors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and clinical officers with comprehensive skills in mental health evaluation using standardized assessment tools, differential diagnosis of common mental health disorders including depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders, and trauma-related conditions, understanding the biopsychosocial model of mental illness, developing evidence-based treatment plans that integrate medication, psychotherapy, and psychosocial interventions, and navigating ethical and legal considerations in mental health practice. Participants will master clinical interviewing techniques, learn to administer and interpret mental status examinations and psychological assessments, understand cultural factors that influence mental health presentation and treatment in Kenyan populations, develop multidisciplinary treatment approaches that leverage available resources, and apply best practices for documentation, safety assessment including suicide risk evaluation, and ongoing treatment monitoring—ultimately raising the standard of mental healthcare delivery across Kenya’s public and private health systems.
