Effects of Substance Use and Substance Use Disorders / Rehabilitation & Treatment

Substance abuse represents one of Kenya’s most pressing public health challenges, affecting individuals across all socioeconomic levels and destroying families, careers, and communities, yet stigma and limited understanding often prevent effective intervention and treatment. This comprehensive program prepares healthcare professionals, counselors, HR personnel, family members, and community leaders to understand the biological, psychological, and social dimensions of substance use disorders, recognize early warning signs of addiction, implement evidence-based intervention strategies, and support individuals through rehabilitation and recovery journeys. Participants will explore the neurological basis of addiction, learn to distinguish between recreational use and dependency, understand the specific impact of substances prevalent in Kenya including alcohol, khat (miraa), cannabis, prescription medications, and emerging synthetic drugs, master motivational interviewing and harm reduction approaches, develop skills for supporting families affected by addiction, and navigate Kenya’s treatment landscape including rehabilitation facilities, support groups, and aftercare resources—ultimately becoming effective advocates and support systems for individuals struggling with substance use disorders while promoting prevention, early intervention, and sustainable recovery in their communities and organizations.
